McBeth Shorthorns

Gerry and Betty Wyatt at Home

Gerry and Betty Wyatt started McBeth Shorthorns in 2004 after many successful years raising Angus cattle under the herd name GBT Angus.

We decided to raise Shorthorn cattle because of the long and exciting history of the breed, the reputation for calving ease, fertility, growth ability, temperament and carcass quality, the increased acceptance of Shorthorn genetics by commercial cattlemen and the great people that are involved with the breed.   We believe the Shorthorn time has arrived and we are very happy to have become part of it.

....News Flash....

In April 2010 we sold our farm to Dan and Dorothy Jeffries of Ponoka, AB.  Their daughter and son-in-law are continuing the bull feeding program and host the sales in the barn.  We have moved to our retirement home we have been creating for the past few years at the resort on White Bear Lake, north of Carlyle, SK.  The majority of our cattle are now on lease to Gary, Kim and Sadie Anwender of Radville, SK. for the time being as we wish to continue to be involved with the Shorthorn breed, albeit from the ‘armchair’.

Uluru Shorthorns started in 2005 when Bob Riviere purchased a few Shorthorn cows and boarded them with McBeth Shorthorns.  After the Wyatt’s sold their farm the cattle remained at the Right Cross Ranch www.rightcrossranch.com with their large Angus herd.

The initial focus of the cattle venture was to have a few cows, sell Shorthorn seed stock and enjoy being with the cattle people.  Over time I purchased many more cows, bulls, embryos, semen, flushed a number of cows, implanted embryos, dabbled with Durham Reds and started chasing “flavors of the day”.  I had cattle in Sask., Ontario and Montana. My program had become too broad and lacked direction.

It was necessary to take stock
and return to the original focus……
“Maintain a few cows and enjoy the ride”.

The performance of all the cows was reviewed and it became evident some culling was required.   After culling the females and selling the spring calves in the fall of 2011 the remaining 15-20 females and a bull are now at Jamie Whitworth’s Shady Lane Shorthorn Farm www.shadylaneshorthorns.com at Mortlach, SK.

This new arrangement is exciting as our focus is similar and having the cows boarded with and managed by an enthusiastic Shorthorn breeder is very conducive to meeting the goals and objectives of this venture.

The goal is to maintain a small herd of high quality purebred Shorthorn females that are moderate in size, structurally correct, performance oriented and appealing to look at.  The objective is to raise quality Shorthorn seed stock that will be of interest to both purebred and commercial cattle people.

AI’ing will become a significant aspect of the program and in 2012 select AI sires will be used which should produce progeny that will meet the objectives.

The flushing and embryo transplant program will continue as suitable high quality donors are identified and satisfactory maternal recips become available.

The show ring is not a priority however, it can be a valuable marketing tool and certain animals from our herd will be exhibited when appropriate, as we did with Uluru Buster 6T and some of our females.

During the few years we have been involved with this cattle venture we have met a great many tremendous cattle people who have been very generous with their support which is greatly appreciated.

The cattle business brings enjoyment and hopefully I can value add to the Shorthorn breed over time. We look forward to the future in these exciting times in the cattle industry.

In 2006 we created and sponsored the Canadian Shorthorn Genetics Mall web site which is now the
